Attracting and Using Money

By Tanis Helliwell
Money is a form of energy that has value because of our thoughts about it. It’s very difficult to manifest what we want in the world if we have not learned how to attract and use money. We need to accurately assess how much money we need in order to accomplish our soul’s purpose. The answer will be different for each of us. Seldom is the soul’s goal to live in poverty but many “spiritual” people erroneously believe that poverty makes them more spiritual. Poverty is something that is imposed on us because we have not learned the rules of survival. Simplicity in life—although it may look like poverty to an outsider—is in fact very different and chosen by the person. When we achieve that state of simplicity we can ask for and receive however much or little money we need. Gandhi and Mother Theresa, for example—while living in voluntary simplicity themselves—knew the rules of manifestation well enough to attract millions of dollars to their causes. Knowing how to manifest and use money, while remaining unattached, comes from mastery in the first, second and third chakras which ground us in the physical reality of the planet.
Small, Medium and Large Amounts of Money
Each of us has different levels of skill with the various tools we need for mastering the material world. Some may be good at showing up, others are skilled at persisting and some are good at attracting and using money. A woman I know—let’s call her Carol—has mastered the ability to handle small and medium amounts of money but she has difficulty both asking for and accepting large amounts of money. Some years ago she was offered 25 acres of property, complete with home and barn by an older friend of hers. His hope was that Carol would turn it into a retreat centre. Overwhelmed with the responsibility of accepting his gift, she refused and started looking around for others for him to give the property to. She found two well respected spiritual teachers who were very happy to accept the property and, in witnessing their willingness, Carol realized that she had an issue with material prosperity.
Her ambivalence towards money stemmed from her childhood. Carol’s parents did not have much money but paid their own way through life never accepting money from others. Her frugal economic independence had been a source of pride for Carol—as it was for her parents—but lately she realized that she was refusing to accept abundance from the universe. Not so long ago a friend of Carol’s asked, “How much money would you like to make each year.”
The question caught her by surprise and raised all her issues about money. “Net or gross?” Carol asked, hedging for time.
“Net,” her friend replied.
“I’d like to clear $40,000 a year,” Carol said. As soon as she spoke, Carol realized that she’d already done this for years and that she’d created a financial limit beyond which she would not go. To remove that self-imposed barrier to prosperity and abundance, she decided to try out another figure.
“No, I’ve changed my mind,” Carol said, “I’d like to make $300,000 a year gross.”
As soon as she said this she started choking, coughing and spluttering. It was so difficult for Carol to ask for this much money because of feelings of greed, fear of failure and fear of responsibility, that she had a physical reaction. This experience was a great teacher for her. So great was her resistance to asking for a large sum of money that she knew she must do just that. Avoiding this challenge was to stay closed to divine abundance and to the proper use of energy in the material world.
Your Relationship With Money
To improve our relationship with money we, like Carol, need to examine any areas where the channels and chakras might be blocked. Here are a few questions to help you clarify your relationship with money. Do you like money? Do you have enough money? Does it come easily to you? Are you afraid of losing it? Is there a balance between how much you receive and how much you spend or give away? Are you equally comfortable with small, medium and large amounts of money? What patterns do you see emerge in your relationship to money?
If you have ambivalent feelings about money, it’s unlikely you’ll be good at attracting it. To overcome ambivalence you might try thinking of all the good things you could do with money, which you can’t do without it. Money is neither negative nor positive; it’s what we do with it that counts. If you are comfortable with small, but not large, amounts of money you might be struggling with issues of greed or lack of worthiness. These are issues that we are taught by our society and it may be time to erase these patterns. Think of money as energy that flows better when it is circulating. To cure a fear of scarcity, give money to others until you have given enough to restore the balance between what you give and receive. You will know that you have mastered this when you have as much money as you need to fulfill your soul’s mission.
