Children Seek Purpose

Close to Home

When my nephew Eric was 15 he went through a deep depression. He lost 25 pounds in two weeks because he was unable to eat or sleep. He was put on drugs so he could cope but all that does is modify the symptoms and doesn’t look at the underlying cause.

When I asked him what the cause was he said that an older friend had died and he started questioning the meaning of life. This led him to start looking at everyone and everything differently. He questioned, Why do people stay in jobs they don’t like? What was he supposed to do in his life? Would he go to heaven?

Making a Difference

This soul searching brought the realization that he wanted to help other children with depression and that he wanted to become a child psychologist. Here is a kid who is super popular and on every sports team going. He thought he wanted to be a professional baseball player but when he had this depression he realized that being a baseball player wasn’t going to help anyone in the world and that he really wanted to help others.

I don’t think Eric’s story is unique. I think that it is the story of many children these days, thinking of what they could do to make a difference in the world they have inherited. There are many wise children being born presently who are asking their parents and other adults tough questions.

Confusion for Children and Teens

Children and teenagers today are very confused and concerned about their identity and what they are going to do in their life. They are bombarded with TV programs and environmental issues about things that are not working in the world. This can lead to depression and chronic low-grade anxiety. Never before have we seen so many children on drugs to alter their moods.

Indigo Children

Some of these children are the indigo children written about “The Indigo Children”, authored by Lee Carroll. These children are looking to be responsible and we need to give them tools to help them do this now, not when they are 20 years old. A lot of these children may not do well in school because they don’t fit into a system of education where they are supposed to conform and not ask and not tell the truth about how they are feeling or thinking. Other children may be very bright and bored with school or super sensitive and constantly concerned with what others think of them and how they can help others. Children can be world servers even if they are very young. They may be old souls in young bodies.

Many children growing up now are wise in a way that their parents and grandparents were not. Adults of my generation had an innocence and trust in our world as a happy, safe place. Children these days are well versed in the problems with the environment, with violence in the world and with the challenges facing their parents. Just as I believe that adults are never given anything they cannot cope with, so I believe that children, even though young in years, have the inner knowing and means to cope with challenges facing them. However, if we adults can help ease the way of children or lessen the difficulties they face and build their self-confidence we will be helping them on their path.

True Confessions

As a young adult I did not appreciate children. Why? Because they didn’t have anything to communicate intellectually that I wanted to learn. At that time of my life I was into head learning and not heart learning. It was when my heart opened more that I started to truly appreciate children. Children are often our teachers in helping us to become more patient, tolerant, flexible, joyful and loving. These are the inner qualities that develop us as human beings and what can we adults do for them?

Kids Have Special Talents

I believe that it is the responsibility of adults to assist children and teenagers to reconnect with their natural gifts and strengths. Some children have natural leadership ability; others have a wonderful sense of humour; others are naturally supportive of others; others have great ideas. These are talents that can be identified early which can lead to success in the lives of these children. We don’t want our young people to close down. We want to honour their truth through their own eyes.
