Cultivate Shining Stars

Von Tanis Helliwell
Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you too can become great. —Mark Twain
Keeping our energy at optimum through the darker days of winter is critical. Our energy is not static. It can increase and decrease depending on the season, how much we are doing, the environment in which we live and work, and the people with whom we associate.
Energy Laws of Cohesion, Adhesion, Repulsion
There are three ways in which our energy can grow or diminish during our interactions with others, whether it is a spouse, friend, work colleague, or even passing acquaintance. These are cohesion, adhesion or repulsion. The energy between you and another person is cohesive when both of you grow because of the interaction. This is what I call 1+1= 3. There are many ways to give others energy. Perhaps you give good ideas to help them to obtain their goal and they, in turn, take you out to a restaurant where you have always wanted to eat. Another way in which you can have a cohesive relationship is to share similar interests with another. This could be jogging with a friend regularly, or belonging to a writing club.
Adhesive, unlike cohesive relationships, are often co-dependent, or stuck, where either one, or both, of the people are limited in what the other person will approve of. Sometimes this happens in marriages, or long-term friendships, where two people, who used to have similar interests, find these have now changed. Perhaps, these two individuals decide to stay in the relationship for the sake of the children, comfort, or fear of being alone. However, there is a sacrifice of energy that happens when a person does this because they have made a decision not to grow.
Repulsion, the third kind of energy exchange, occurs when two people have no common ground of understanding. This could happen the first time you meet someone, but it might also occur over time. For example, if your workplace feels inharmonious, it could be that you are misplaced there and need to look for another place to work. You might be compatible with your work and colleagues for many years, and then, either your energy or theirs changes and you find yourself no longer compatible.
Attracting Shining Stars and Being One
It is important to maintain our energy and, if possible, to increase it. We are either increasing the energy of others, and they ours, or we are diminishing their energy, and they ours. If we are depressed, burned out or negative, we take energy from others. If we are enthusiastic, optimistic, and enjoying life, we give energy to others. I am not recommending abandoning friends who are going through a particularly difficult time. However, associating with people whose lives are always difficult drains our energy leaving us with less energy to pursue our goals and enjoyment.
Energy, like time, is a precious resource. We need to make conscious choices about how we use both of these resources. Remember our energy increases in an easy and natural way when we have cohesive relationships so seek people and situations where this occurs, and decrease cohesive and repulsive situations. Healthy relationships entail a balance in the amount of energy that we give and the amount we receive. I’m not suggesting that we do daily tallies but, when we think of work colleagues or friends, we will have a good sense about the state of the energy balance between them and us.
To increase our life energy we must cultivate energy donors—shining stars—and at the same time be one ourselves so that shining stars will wish to associate with us. There are many ways we can donate energy and feed others. Some of these are to have a good sense of humour, give good hugs, be interested in other’s lives, and suggest good ideas that will help others to achieve their life purpose. Think of shining stars that you know. In what ways do they give energy to all those who meet them? Basically, if we feel better after having been with someone, this person is a shining star. These people are gifts in our life.
