Peace in Our Time
Peace in Our Time: A Journey of Transformation
Von Tanis Helliwell
So Much to be Grateful For
As I write to you I think of all that I have to be thankful for. Good friends and family that sometimes don’t understand me but who love me anyhow. Oh yes and way up on the list is work that I love. To this I could also add a healthy body and great gratitude that I am alive on the Earth at this time. When I think of these things my heart is filled with love and I want to reach out and hug everyone. My gawd, even strangers.
I don’t think these feelings are unique to me. I bet you were mentally doing your own check list and also discovered that you’re lucky to be alive. As Red Skelton said, “Life is wonderful. Without it you’re dead.” Why then when you and I have so much to be grateful for do we find ourselves living in a world of war, violence, bitterness, and depression?
Ways to Make a Difference
I believe that we collectively have created the world we live in and that each of us can do something to create a world we’d prefer. There are many ways you might already be doing this. Perhaps you coach kids sports, or give money to charities that are cleaning up the environment, or maybe you sponsor children in third world countries. However you choose to participate in making the world a better place for all, I salute you and thank the Creator that you are here in the world. Never give up hope and keep on every day recommitting to your vision of a healthy planet, a home for all races of people and animals living in harmony with one another.
Prayers for Peace
The most important challenge facing our world at present is the issue of establishing global harmony amongst nations and religions. I appreciate that this concern is shared by millions and that each of us is attempting to find a way that we can do something to encourage peace in our world.
My way of contributing to this building momentum for peace has been different over many years. For 22 years I organized tours to sacred sites of the world to take individuals to pray for peace. We had one uniting vision—to pray for peace in our time. On one occasion I took 22 men and women from Germany, Britain, the US and Canada to Egypt to pray in the pyramid of Giza that lies at the exact centre of the Earth. The pyramid, for thousands of years it has been a magnetic centre of energy for the planet holding a certain vibration of consciousness. It was now time to attune the pyramid to go to a higher frequency—to move from a vibration of will to a vibration of love
Our tour coincided with recent discoveries in the pyramid. You might have seen the director of Egyptian antiquities Dr. Hawass on television showing the tunnels that are being discovered in the pyramid. We were extremely fortunate to meet with Dr. Hawass for two hours and to view his recent findings. Our group was given permission by Dr. Hawass to have the entire pyramid of Giza to ourselves where we could pray for peace in the various chambers including a total silent meditation in the pitch darkness of the King’s chamber.
It is impossible to describe in words the incredible feeling of awe and divine presence that one feels when meditating within the pyramid in complete darkness. Many felt that it was one of the most significant events of their life. In this embracing silence we prayed for peace and linked our prayers to all people in the world who are also praying.
During our tour we were also able to go to Mt. Sinai where, over three thousand years ago, Moses was given the 10 commandments by God. Those of our group who were physically able climbed to the summit of Mt Sinai while the rest prayed at the base. At the summit was a wooden stake in the ground and on it a prayer for peace. How strengthening to feel our connection with those who were there before us and those who come after us all with the same motivation of praying for peace.
Jimmy Carter: A political leader to emulate
I remember when the former president Jimmy Carter was awarded the Noble Peace prize for his work so many years ago with President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Prime Minister Begin of Israel. This was a clear statement on the part of the global community that peace is the highest goal to which we can aspire at this time. I believe it still is. Let us draw our strength, as Jimmy Carter did, from the knowledge that he and we are serving a higher cause. Let us not look to others for approval, but find our strength in knowing that our heart expands with love when we do this. Let us demonstrate our good will towards others by finding ways to love them more. Peace in the world will only happen when we also have found inner peace as our outer reality mirrors our inner one.
Muslim Prayer for Peace
“In the name of Allah, the beneficent, the merciful. Praise be to the Lord of the Universe who has created us and made us into tribes and nations that we may know each other, not that we may despise each other. If the enemy inclines toward Peace, do thou also incline towards peace, and trust in God, for the Lord is the one that heareth and knoweth all things. And the servants of God, Most Gracious, are those who walk on the Earth in humility, and when we address them, we say ‘Peace.’”
