Working with the Seasons

Von Tanis Helliwell

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven” Ecclesiastes 3, verse 1

If we wish to have a balanced life it is important that we live and work with the seasons. There are natural cycles in nature that must be respected if we are to move with and not against the natural flow. Let’s examine the four seasons to see how to use each according to its’ essence.

Spring

Spring is the season of new growth. In spring the Earth gives us abundant energy to break new ground. This is a pioneering energy that we can use at work because it sweeps away resistance just like the seed breaks through the hard packed winter soil to create a new plant. This is a good time to birth new ideas, start projects, try things we’ve never tried before.

Summer

Summer is the season of fertility. It takes a lot of energy in spring to start something new and summer uses this momentum to continue what we started. Summer is a time of productivity and abundance. Doors open easily, people enjoy our work and we are able to accomplish a great deal in little time. Summer is a time of success and accomplishment. It is the season with which our organizations feel the most comfortable as it fits the prevailing traditional North American mind set.

Autumn

Autumn is the season of reaping in the wheat and leaving behind the chaff. During autumn it is time to ask ourselves what we are doing that we no longer want to do. It is a time of re-assessment when we celebrate what we have accomplished and eliminate what is no longer working. It is a time to finish projects and decide which work or clients we want to keep and which are not in keeping with what we want to do.

Winter

Winter is the season of rest. It is time to cocoon and let go of all that no longer works. Winter often calls us to leap empty handed into the void with only faith and trust that something new will come. This is a time of leaving jobs or of working the minimum amount necessary in our existing job. It is a time of reflection. This is not being lazy; it is being.

Both individuals and organizations often have difficulty with winter but this season is a necessary part of living and of working. Without winter there is no fallow time to allow the deeper urges of our unconscious to surface. It is necessary for our creative process to work and we need winter if we are to give rise to a fully formed seed in the spring. If we are so full of doing that we have no time for being, then new ideas do not enter our life. This leaves us feeling hollow and depressed.

Monthly cycles

Being aware of monthly cycles and working with the lunar energy will also help us to be productive and creative at work. The new moon is carries spring energy, full moon—summer, waning moon—autumn and dark of the moon—winter. We can use these cycles to plan our monthly work. I find that the bulk of my creative work happens from new to full moon and then I do more routine work in the waning moon. I know a man who writes books using this lunar cycle. He creates his original work during the two weeks of the waxing to full moon and then he edits and revises his work during the last two weeks of the waning moon.

Daily cycles

We can use the natural cycle of energy on a daily as well as an annual basis. Morning is spring, afternoon is summer, evening is autumn and night is winter. We can attune our life, using this cycle, so that our new or difficult work is done in the morning when our energy is rising and then our routine work is done in the afternoon. As evening arrives we could go for a walk to reflect on the day’s events. Walking, jogging or swimming are good ways to integrate learnings and let go of feelings or ideas that don’t work. Night is a time of rest and we need to have enough sleep to allow our subconscious time to process the day’s events and our body time to re-energize for the next day.
