How to Increase Your Energy

By Tanis Helliwell
Orende—the Cherokee Word for Life Energy
Keeping our energy at optimum through dark winter days days is critical. Our energy is not static. It can increase and decrease depending on the season, the people with whom we associate and the environment in which we live and work.
In the Cherokee tradition the energy of all things, including humans, plants, animals and minerals is called orende. Orende levels vary for all these beings and currently most humans function at a level between 2.3 and 2.6. out of a possible score of 10. A more conscious person functions at a level of 5 or above.
Laws of Cohesion, Adhesion, Repulsion
In our interactions with others we follow the orende laws of cohesion, adhesion or repulsion depending on the orende difference between us. If the energy difference between two individuals is + or-1, they will more likely interact with a cohesive energy, which means they will have a positive attraction to each other. If the energy is + or -2, they will more likely have an adhesive energy, which means there will be a bit of stuckness or dependence in the relationship. If the difference is greater than 2, they will more likely experience repulsion, meaning they will have no common ground of understanding.
If we choose friends, spouses and work colleagues where there is no more than two degrees difference in their orende and ours, the relationships are more harmonious and growthful. I appreciate that this may be difficult to do in our work places, but we can decrease the amount of time we spend at lunch and coffee breaks with people who are not compatible, and instead increase the amount of time with more compatible people. If our entire workplace feels inharmonious, it could be that we are misplaced there and should look for a another place to work. We might be compatible with our work and friends for many years, and then, either our energy or theirs changes and we find ourselves no longer compatible.
Calculating Your Energy Level
Our total energy for how well we function in the world is made up of our mental, emotional, sexual and physical orende levels. In order to calculate your orende, refer to the following chart. Circle one number in each area, which best describe your present mental, emotional, sexual and physical needs.
Ways to Increase Your Energy
There are many ways to increase your orende. If there is a large gap between your strong and weak areas, rather than focusing on the areas where you already excel, you may want to focus on improving your weak area. Some ideas to increase each area are as follows.
Physical
To strengthen yourself physically walk in nature regularly to ground your energy, to awaken your sense of beauty and to strengthen your physical body. Monitor the amount of food you eat and if you have a tendency to overeat decrease the amount of food you eat and sleep you need. For everyone, eating healthier, organic food, which has not be radiated or micro-waved, is beneficial.
Sexual
To develop your sexual energy remember that this energy may be employed for sexual pleasure, healing, creativity and spiritual transformation. It is not the frequency of orgasm that is the criteria for positive use of this energy, but level of fulfillment. Does our sexual connection open our hearts to others, does it break up old patterns, does it feed our blood and our cells, does it lead to heightened intuition and bliss? These are the criteria for optimal use of our sexual energy. Furthermore, sometimes we may need to strengthen this area through celibacy.
Emotional
Emotionally, we will increase our energy if we are less dependent on others for our emotional needs. Are we able to operate independently and make soulful choices for our life regardless of what others think? This is emotional independence. I am not recommending that we are selfish and do not consult others, especially if our decisions affect them, but that we learn to act appropriately even when we are afraid and rejected by others.
Mental
Mentally we will increase our orende through our curiosity, and there are many ways in which we may be curious. We may be curious about people, ideas or things and what’s important is the curiosity. To develop our curiosity we could change old patterns, meet new people, read different books, take a course and drive home a different way each day.
Spiritual
There are ways to measure spiritual orende, which includes gifts of healing, clairaudience, clairsentience and clairvoyance and to develop our spirituality we need to develop all of these gifts. We need to examine where we are presently and then take the next step to develop each of these gifts. For example, we can do this by meditating, dream remembrance and analysis, taking spiritual courses, committing to a teacher who has these gifts, doing rituals, chanting and working with a transpersonal therapist.
